Choro da Alegria
Extraordinary melodies and Samba rhythms
Choro da Alegria (choro of happiness) is a Portland-based ensemble dedicated to playing the wonderful melodies of Brazil. The group draws much inspiration from the genre choro, which means cry or lament and has been loosely called “Brazilian ragtime.” Choro features samba rhythms, jazzy chords and fast tempos. Beyond choro the group enjoys performing classics tunes from Bossa Nova and MPB. The group released its first CD, “quiosque,” in 2015.
Choro da Alegria is:
Tom Pinit, bandolim
Pam Beaty, 7 string guitar and cavaquinho
Esteban Diaz, percussion
Peter Fung, percussion, cavaquinho and guitar
Please let me say what a pleasure it was having the band perform this past Saturday at North Park Blocks. The band's energy and talent were appreciated by all. This is just a note from me to say how much the 2019 Portland Parks and Rec Summer Free For All program appreciates the all-star performance. Sending a big “We Appreciate You All” for your phenomenal professionalism and the beautiful music. It was simply amazing to watch dancers (youth & adults) having a great time.

Choro da Alegria's wonderful performance opened our weekend of festival events with perfect blend of elegant, upbeat music and a lovely, warm onstage presence! Throughout the rest of our festival, many audience members continued to tell us how much they loved hearing Choro da Alegria play.

Thank you for the wonderful contribution Choro da Alegria made to our wedding; I cannot tell you how glad we are that you were part of our celebration. You brought such class to our event. We also appreciate your help in choosing songs for the ceremony itself. They were perfect – a lovely tune at the beginning and another to end the ceremony with just the right note to match our joy. Thanks again for your beautiful work.

Choro da Alegria is fantastic. We had a party of about 80 people and the music could not have been better. Tom and his bandmates provided uplifting music that filled the room with rhythmic sounds based in the music of Brazil providing not only a backdrop but also the driving energy for a good time. There was lively conversation and crowd pleasing music that kept the party going strong and longer than anticipated. Choro da Alegria provided the perfect music for this amazingly diverse group of people which was younger, older and included all walks of life and all had the best time. The compliments are still coming!

I just wanted to thank you for keeping culture alive in the Portland area. I purchased a CD and listened to you at the Farmer's Market on the 14th of July in Vancouver. You sound wonderful together and your music lifts my spirit and makes me smile.
Tom Pinit, Pam Beaty, and Peter Fung represented Choro da Alegria with their wonderful choro music at the Environmental Education Association of Oregon (EEAO)'s End of Summer Soirée at Leach Botanical Garden. It added SO much to make the event a success, and so many folks commented about how great the music was and how much it added to the evening. I have enjoyed performances of the complete ensemble before, too, and it always seems to put on smile on everyone's face with just the right combination of lively tunes, variety, and a full, acoustic sound that soothes the soul . . . kind of like the experience of enjoying a lovely botanical garden with a breeze in the trees, water flowing, and diverse bird species enjoying one last happy chorus during the "golden hour" as the sun goes down.

Choro da Alegria is the perfect background music for your fundraising event or social gathering. Their beautiful acoustic sounds set the mood perfectly. And, they're friendly to work with and very flexible. Book them for your next event, you won't regret it!

We loved having Choro da Alegria play at our event. Their uptempo repertoire set the tone for lively conversation among out guests and also made a great focal point for those who wanted to watch them perform. The band was great to work with. They were easy to coordinate with and super flexible as the agenda for our event evolved on the spot. We would highly recommend hiring them to perform at your next event.
